Soon to be release Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and Disney’s Aladdin (2019) are filmed in several locations in Wadi Rum and surrounding desert.
While Aladdin (2019) is a fantasy film, the rock arches featured in Aladdin are real.
Wadi Rum’s distinctive red sands and dramatic sandstone mountains and desert landscapes have been used at the background of countless movies. It is a spectacular location for shooting films, documentaries and other projects. Due to its resemblance to the surface on Mars, it is a popular location for shooting sci-fi and space films.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962), was the first to introduce Wadi Rum to the world in film. The film follows T.E. Lawrence, a British intelligence officer, who was assigned to investigate the progress of the Arab revolt against Ottoman rule. He organises a guerrilla army to successfully fight the Turks. Films shot in Wadi Rum include: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), although mainly filmed in Petra, Wadi Rum was also used for some scenes in the film.Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Prometheus (2012), Jordanian film Theeb (2014) and Star Wars Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2017), location for Star Wars planet Jedha.
