How to enjoy your desert tour on a hot summer day

Deserts are inhospitable places. They are known for the cold winters, hot summers, the harsh sun, dry winds and limited rainfall. You would not expect that these places have a magical attraction. But they do. And Wadi Rum desert is like a magnet with its stunningly beautiful Mars-like landscape. Each year over 250.000 people visit our beautiful desert. Most of them come on a ½ or 1-day tour in spring or autumn. If you want to beat the crowd and have the desert to yourself, you have two options. Go on a multiple-day tour to visit more remote areas or visit in summer or winter. In this blog, we give you five tips to make a summer visit to Wadi Rum desert an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. In fact, these tips for your desert tour on a hot summer day are universally applicable for all holidays to ‘hot summer’ destination.

Slow down

The most significant favour you can do yourself is slowing down. Slow down your pace, slow down your brain and slow down on your ambitious plans. Accept the heat and adjust to it. This way you can handle heat much better.

Stay hydrated

On a hot summer day, it is essential to keep your body hydrated at all times. Don’t wait until you get thirsty. It is a much better idea to start drinking right after you wake up. If you drink a little throughout the day, you will be perfectly fine. Preferably you drink water, juices or tea. And try to avoid dehydrating drinks containing caffeine and alcohol. Make sure you always have something to drink with you. During our tours, we provide you with as much water as you need.

Wear appropriate clothing

A lot of people think that wearing less keeps you cool. But this is not true. Exposing your skin to the sun only results in increases your body temperature. Stay cool by wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved, preferably cotton clothes. And protect your head from the sun by wear a hat or scarf. When you feel too hot, you can cool yourself. By pouring water on your wrist and ankles. Or soaking your scarf or hat in water to cool your head. Want to know what, desert dwellers wear to protect ourselves from the sun? Avoid direct sunlight

We try to avoid exposing ourselves to the harsh sun as much as possible. We do this by adjusting the tour program. We try to visit most sides when they are shaded. And when driving or walking, we try to stay in the shade as much as possible too.

Relax during the heat of the day

We change our schedule. We get up early in the morning to finish most of our tour program before mid-day. Then we take an extra-long lunch break. We relax in the shade until the heat of the day passed. In the late afternoon, we continue our tour until the sun sets. After sunset, temperatures drop fast, which enables us to enjoy pleasant evenings and a good night sleep under the stars.
